Flintshire “A” Team Captains report. Hawkes home to Gate A. 7th May

Tonight’s game just goes to show what it means to have support all around the green.

It was a story of comeback kings and queens, with Chris Ablett leading the way. 11-0 down, Chris clawed his way back into the match, and when he was 20-14 down, he showed fantastic composure to run out winner 21-20.

That result, along with Sue Tidman’s fantastic comeback from 18-12 down, got us off to a flying start. Geoff Hopwood and Matthew Lamb completed the first four winners with Matt taking the sweep (21-12) and Geoff winning to 14.

Mark and Jane Lamb made big comebacks too, showing their metal in two tough games. Jane was 20-17 down and ran out, and Mark was 16-11 down and won to 17. There must have been something in the milk tonight.

An excellent win also for Ken Parry who had a tricky game against Gate’s Gareth Rogers, and Peter McCann just lost out in an epic 21-20 defeat. Paul Roberts also just missed out, going down 19 to Mike Davies who had to be at his best.

Gate really pushed us tonight, and the 10-2 victory doesn’t really do them justice. But these are the home wins we need, and it was the team effort that got us through tonight, non playing vice captain Barry Smith playing a vital role around the green and running proceedings.

With all the comebacks, Player of the Match was yet again a really tough choice, but to be 11-0 down, then 20-14 down and eventually win 21-20, it goes to Chris Ablett. What a great result.
